In the waning days of the Korean War, a company of American soldiers is sent to re-take a
hill from a much larger force of the Chinese Army. The film is based on the Battle of Pork
Chop Hill, a fierce engagement which took place between soldiers of the U.S. Army's 7th
Infantry Division, and Chinese Communist Forces, during the last stages of the Korean War,
in the spring of 1953. They are successful in their goal of retaking the top of the hill
but are depleted in fighting strength. They get ready for a large-scale Chinese counter-attack
in which they know they'll be overwhelmed and killed. The vicious fighting occurred during
the Panmunjeom cease-fire negotiations. The film suggests that the Chinese continue to lose
lives over the insignificant hill for the sole reason to show their political resolve at the
bargaining table. The question is how will the Americans respond? Lieutenant Gregory Peck
leads a 135-man unit on the attack of the Chinese-held Pork Chop Hill. When reinforcements
finally arrive, only 25 of Peck's men survive (and they aren't the usual survivors we've come
to expect from earlier, cliché-ridden war films).
